Designer fashion can be expensive. Often, high-end clothing is worth the big price tag – it’s hand-made, has intricate details, and is made from beautiful materials. However, a wardrobe by high-end designers isn’t accessible to everyone.

Great style, on the other hand, is available at any price point. If designer fashion is beyond your budget, here are some tips for creating looks from ready-to-wear, off-the rack, or even resale garments that are inspired by runway fashion.

I took some looks right off the Fashion Houston runway and used them as inspiration for some looks for less. When you create your own looks here are some You have to modify the looks you see on the runway, so they flatter your body and work for your life.

Keep in mind that runway looks are styled to look spectacular on 6 ft-tall, size 0 model walking on a stage. If you try to wear an outfit exactly like the model does, you’ll get frustrated because it won’t look good on you.

1. Runway looks are theatrical and usually too over-the-top for real life. – Choose one garment or idea to incorporate into your everyday look instead of copying all the ideas in a runway look at once.
2. Only wear clothes that flatter you – change the proportions or shape of a runway look so it works for your body.
3. Translate the elements you like in a way that works for you – create your outfit using runway colors combinations, mix and match styles or fabrics in a way that is similar to the runway look, incorporate details like ruffles, pleats or beading in a scale that is practical and flattering.

Fashion Houston is 4 nights of New York style runway shows that are open to the public! Runway fashion is theatrical and over-the-top because that’s what looks good on stage. It’s an art show, designed to excite and inspire you. If you copy those looks for real life, they won’t work.

You have to modify the looks you see on the runway, so they flatter your body and work for your life.

1. Copying a runway look literally doesn't work – the look was created to look good on 6 ft-tall, size 0 model walking across a stage. If you try to wear the outfit exactly like the model does, you’ll get frustrated because it won’t look good on you.
2. Only wear silhouettes that flatter you – change the proportions or shape of a runway look so it works for you.
3. Translate the elements you like – incorporate colors, details, or style combinations that you like into your outfit.

This thrift store shopping segment aired on Great Day Houston on August 17, 2011. The thrift store story starts about 7 minutes into the video.

Happy National Thrift Store Day! Thrift Store shopping has always made your dollars go further...now people are shopping at second-hand stores because it's green too. When you buy something used, you give it a new life, keep the item out of a landfill, and conserve resources because fewer new goods are needed. Here are some tips for shopping at thrift stores:

1. Know the difference between thrift stores, resale shops, vintage stores, and pawn shops.
· Thrift Stores – Usually inexpensive gently used or new merchandise. Most are run by charities and some are operated for profit. (The Guild Shop, Goodwill Boutique, Salvation Army, Family Thrift Center)
· Resale Shops – Sell gently-used or new items. Items in these stores are less expensive than when purchased in a traditional retail store, but they are not always cheap. (More Than You Can Imagine, Marry Go Round, Buffalo Exchange)
· Vintage Store – Items were made at least 25 years ago – generally from the 1920s to 1980s. Items may not be inexpensive.
· Pawn Shops – Items were sold by owner. Can be a great place for jewelry and high-end handbags.
2. Bring a shopping list – You never know what you’re going to find and it’s easy to get distracted by all the different merchandise. A list will keep you focused on looking for what you need.
3. Buy what you love – it’s easy to be seduced into buying something because it is inexpensive. It’s only a deal if you love it and will wear it often.
4. Go often – The merchandise changes daily, if you don’t fine what you want, so back every couple days or weekly and try again.
5. Try everything on – the label on the item may not reflect the real size. The garment Size may have shrunk, stretched, been tailored or mislabeled, or the brand can run small/large.
6. Wear a skirt or work out clothes – There might not be a dressing room to try on clothes, so wear a skirt so you can slip pants on underneath to check the fit, or try on the clothes over the clothes you are wearing.
7. It’s okay to buy items with a little damage – a tailor can fix tears in seams, missing buttons, or slight fit problems. A jeweler can fix missing clasps, broken chains, and some missing rhinestones. If it’s major damage it might not be fixable or worth the cost.
8. Don’t buy it if it smells – if it smells in the store, chances are dry cleaning or laundering won’t get it out.
9. Check the markdown and sale schedule, the item you want may be even cheaper.
10. Bring something to sell or donate – some thrift stores like Buffalo Exchange buy used items, so bring a few items you don’t need/like to sell and make a little shopping money. If it’s a charity thrift store, donate the items for a tax deduction.
11. Know the return policy – Most thrift store sales are final. Check the return policy so you know if returnable items can be returned for the same value.

From The Cover To The Closet: Making A Magazine Look Work For Your Body

Every month thousands of women buy fashion magazines looking for fashion trends and outfits to inspire them. Most people try to recreate those magazine looks by wearing the exact same pieces they see on the models and get frustrated when the looks don’t flatter their bodies. The worst part? Women think the problem is them and their bodies. The problem isn’t their bodies, it’s the CLOTHES.

Today, we chose a look and adjusted it for six different body types. We chose an outfit that would work for a date, crawfish boil or traveling and sightseeing. The main pieces are a boyfriend jacket, shorts and fitted top. Every one of our models loved the look in the magazine.

Recreating this look for real bodies was REALLY hard!! The boyfriend jacket caused a major problem because it didn’t look good on any one of the six models - was too straight, hid everyone’s waist and made them all feel fatter. So if you’re aggravated by fashion, you are not alone!

We had to make adjustments to the outfit for each women to correct for body proportions and maintain a lean silhouette. The “perfect” woman’s figure is an hourglass where shoulders, bust and hips have the same width and the waist about ¾ of that width. And the top of her body (head to crotch) is the same height as the bottom of her body (crotch to toes). The strategy in the styling is to make all the real proportions look like the ideal proportions. The jackets required major adjustments to make this look work.

Model 1 (Estella, size 10) – Straight Body/Banana (bust, hips and waist are about the same width)
· Estella had the easiest time with this look.
· Instead of a totally straight jacket, hers is slim fitting and comes in at her waist.
· Shorts would have worked, but the short skirt was even more flattering, so we opted for a short skirt to show off her legs.
· We chose an open neckline because it makes her look taller and leaner than the jewel neckline in the magazine look.

Model 2 (Valerie, size 10 petite) – Apple Body (fuller in the waist and tummy)
· The top in the magazine look was very fitted and would have been too tight for Valerie. We chose a top that was cut with more room in the waist and tummy area. It also has a pattern of ruching that provides some stretch and camouflages the tummy.
· We chose a jacket with an open neckline to make her look taller direct attention away from her tummy. It also is very curved in the waist and flared at the hip, to make her waist look smaller.
· Valerie’s shoes are the same color as her skin to make her legs look longer.

Model 3 (Lori, size 0) – Petite (less than 5’4”)
· She is a petite size zero and with a perfectly proportioned hourglass figure.
· The jacket is shorter and very fitted in the waist and hips to show off her figure.
· The color is similar to her skintone to elongates her legs.
· The pink cami under the lace top brings color into the outfit and shows the detail of the lace.

Model 4 (Tia, size 8) – Tall (over 5’7”)
· Tia is 6 feet tall. If we used the usual styling strategies, we would have made her look even taller.
· The loose jacket works on a taller figure because it makes her look shorter.
· We chose a short dress with horizontal stripes. These stripes break up her body and make her look shorter.
· The shoes have the same effect – they also have horizontal lines and the color contrasted against her skin to make her look shorter.

Model 5 (Dalita, size 16) – Upside Down Pear (full bust)
· Her jacket is fitted just below the bustline, to show off her small waist. A straight jacket would have made her look 20 to 50 pounds heavier.
· To minimize her the top half of her body, we chose a jacket in a darker color (darker colors make you look smaller).
· Dalita’s hips are more narrow than her bust, so we chose a lighter skirt to balance out her top.
· The color of her shoes is similar to her skintone to make her legs look longer and her whole body look leaner.

Model 6 (Julia, size 4) – Pear (full hips)
· We chose a jacket with shoulder pads to make her shoulders wider and balance her fuller hips.
· Her shorts are a darker color to minimize that area hips and make them appear to be the same width at her bust/shoulders.
· We added color in the shoes and jewelry

The key to making a magazine look work for you is to remember that the look was designed for that model. Use the look for inspiration rather than a blue print. Adjust it to flatter your body.

How To Wear A Wrap Cardigan

The wrap cardigan is the most versatile piece of the season. It works 7 days a week and can take you from day to night, work to weekend, and business meeting to casual Friday. All it takes is a little creativity.

This style of sweater is flattering for lots of body types because you can just choose the wrapping styles that flatter your figure. The sweaters come in lots of colors, fabrics, price points and makers, so you can find one that’s perfect for you. The cardigans shown in the segment are from DKNY.

Here are some easy ways to wrap the sweater
1. Plain and long - just wear the sweater open with the tails hanging straight down
2. Plain and long with a belt - just wear the sweater open with the tails hanging straight down with a belt around your waist
3. Plain and long with a knot – tie a small knot in the side of the tails to pull the sweater in and define your waist
4. Plain and short - tie the tails together with a small knot and place the knot around the back of your neck

Here are some other ways to wrap the sweater (watch the video to see these options demonstrated...they'll make more sense when you see them)
5. Cowl-neck - prepare the sweater as in #4. Before you slip the knot behind your neck, twist the knotted ends once and slip your neck through the loop that's formed by the twist. The twist will create a cowl-effect.
5. Twisty cowl-neck - prepare the sweater as in #5, but twist 3 - 5 times to slim the sweater so it shows off your figure.
6. Cross-over with tie in front
7. Short jacket

9. Cross over dress with bangle
10. Backwards off-the-shoulder

This TV segment airs on Great Day Houston on October 8, 2010. Thank you Chloe Dao and Cesar Galindo for your graciousness and kind words. I so appreciate you being part of the segment with me!

Fashion runway events occur in the major fashion cities around the world – New York, Milan, Paris. Houston is the latest addition to that list. Next week, for the first time, Fashion runway shows are coming to Houston in Fashion Houston 2010! On the runway, you’ll see some of our hometown fashion superstars like Chloe Dao, Toni Whittaker and Caesar Galindo.

So, if you’re going to the shows, what do you wear?? You may not have the top designer’s fashions in your closet, but you can take inspiration from your favorite designer and create a fantastic outfit from items right in your closet. When you use a look for inspiration, you don’t need to copy the outfit. Instead, incorporate similar elements to make your own look. Look 1: Chloe’s dress has the following components: asymmetrical neckline, an electric blue horizontal and vertical geometrical element and whimsical pink tulle ruffle. In the inspiration look, the Imagine Team chose an asymmetrical dress in a similar color pallet with a sleeve that mirrors the inspirations pink ruffle. We added a blue man’s tie worn as a belt for a whimsical blue geometric element.

Look 2: Chloe’s outfit has the following components: an easy printed boat-neck blouse and loose, pleated shorts with big pockets. In the inspiration look, we chose a chiffon boat-neck blouse in a similar color pallet. The print seems to flow across the blouse mimicking the feel of the flying birds in Chloe’s outfit. We added loose pleated shorts in a coordinating color.

Fashion Designer Cesar Galindo’s collections are crisp, clean and architectural. His pieces are usually created in solid colors.

Look 1: Cesar’s dress has the following components: a simple silhouette, an architectural skirt, knee-length hem and sparkly neckline. We chose a white cotton dress that has a similar crispness and silhouette. We added a couple crystal necklaces for a sparkly v-neckline.

Look 2: Cesar’s gown has: a strapless neckline, simple silhouette, beautiful flowing fabric, and a full-length hem. We chose a silk strapless gown in a similar color. The inspiration dress is a full-length gown with a similar neckline and flowing fabric. We used a flower hair piece to mimic the tiny hat in Cesar’s look.

Runway To Reality - Making Fall Fashion Trends Work For Your Body

The fashion trends for Fall 2010 are filled with ruffles, jewel tones, animal print, gold, feathers and faux fur, mixed prints, leather jackets and chunky knits.

On The Runway, designers show you how to wear the trends if you are model thin. These options often add volume to your body and make you look bigger. You don't have to sacrifice your body for fashion. Everybody can wear every trend; however, the way you can wear it depends on your body type. Here are ways to them if you petite, plus size, or anything in between.

Animal Print – Animal prints have multiple personalities. You can use it as an accents, neutrals, or use them to make a major statement.

• Mannequin – Petite – We mixed leopard and tortoise accents with black to give the outfit a little personality without overpowering a petite frame.

• Mannequin – Missy – Use the print to highlight the face and hips. We used the black cardigan to create a color block effect than narrows the waist.

• Mannequin – Women – Full figured women can make a bold statement. Layers create the illusion of a narrower figure.

Ruffles – On the runway, ruffles come in all sizes, shapes and materials. These work for models, but not so well if you have curves. Here’s how to make ruffles work:

• Model Amy - Petite (ladies less than 5’4” tall) – Keep the ruffles flat and small to they are in proportion with your frame. Ruffles work as trim or accents on necklines, sleeves and hems.

• Model Anicea - Missy (ladies size 0-16 and more than 5’5” tall) – use big ruffles to accent your assets and flat or small ruffles on areas where you don’t want to add much volume.

• Mannequin - Women (ladies size 14 – 28+) – choose flat and stream-line ruffles to high-light your assets. Structured clothing works best to keep the body looking smooth.

Jewel Tones – This is one of the easiest trends to wear. Add one jewel tone piece to a neutral outfit for a pop of color or mix several together for a bolder look.

• Mannequin - Petite – Voluminous clothing will make you look smaller and shorter. Choose clothing that is fitted and skims your body without gaping or pulling on a roll/bulge. Mix jewel tones with dark neutrals for a taller, leaner look.

• Model Molly - Missy – Use jewel tones as a pop of color to direct attention to your assets and away from any flaws.

• Model Stephanie – Women – Black is slimming and so are all deep colors. Here we created a warmer monochromatic look with eggplant instead of black. Monochromatic outfits make you look taller which automatically makes you look slimmer. For example: a 150 pound woman who is 5-feet tall looks different than one who is 6-feet tall.

Preserve Your Favorite Clothes

Why not keep your favorite clothes and accessories looking great for as long as you can? Here are some tips for extending the life of clothes and shoes.

1. Underarm stains can make a beautiful blouse unwearable. Take a tip from the guys and wear a short-sleeve T under dresses, blouses and sweaters. The t-shirt will absorb perspiration and deoderant stains. Or use disposable underarm shields inside the armpit of your clothes. The shield will block sweat and deodorant from penetrating the fabric of your garments.

2. Extend the life of your bras by letting them rest for a day between wearings. The rest period allows the elastic in the bra to spring back so it doesn’t get permanently stretched out.

3. Unzipped zippers can snag other clothing in the washing machine and dryer. Before washing anything with a zipper, zip it all the way up. You can even put it in a lingerie bag to keep the zippers away from other clothing.

4. Wash whites immediately after every wearing. Perspiration, body oils, perfumes may not be visible, but they will turn whites to yellows or grays over time if they stay on the clothing. Wash clothes in the hottest water that is safe for the fabric. Use bleach or borax for extra whitening. For best results, dry for a few minutes in the dryer and finish by hang-drying in the sunshine. The sun will gently whiten and brighten your whites.

5. Frequent washings can fade dark clothes. Minimize washings and wash darks with clothing turned inside out in cold water on a short wash cycle. For best results, dry darks in the dryer for a few minutes to get the wrinkles out and finish drying on a rack.

6. Regular detergent and detergents made for wool break down the elastic in delicate clothing and lingerie. Wash delicates by hand in the sink with a little Ivory Snow or Lingerie Wash. If you have to wash them in the washing machine, place your lingerie in a lingerie bag and wash in cold water on delicate cycle. Taking extra care with your delicates will keep them in great condition and make them last longer.

7. The dryer is very hard on delicates, spandex and elastic. For best results, dry lingerie on a drying screen to maintain their shape. For delicate clothing and athletic wear, dry them in the dryer on low heat for a few minutes to remove any wrinkles and finish drying on a rack.

8. To keep your athletic shoes smelling sweet, switch to wool socks. Wool absorbs moisture and wicks it away. This makes it harder for the stinky bacteria to grow.

9. Protect your pretty shoes, don’t wear them to drive. Driving damages the backs and heels of your shoes. When your foot is on the accelerator, the back of your shoe is in contact with the floor mat and gets scuffed. For driving, change into moccasins that are specially made for driving. These mocs have protective rubber grommets on the soles and backs of the shoes to protect the finish (Minnetonka Driving Mocs from ShoeBuy.com, $63) . And they are sturdy enough to wear when you get out of your car at a gas station to pump gas. Keep your pretty shoes in a protective bag in your car and put them on when you arrive at your destination.

10. Store your favorite shoes with wooden shoe trees. The trees absorb perspiration and keep your shoes in shape. Take the shoes you wear regularly to a cobbler every 6-months for a check up. The cobbler will replace heels and soles, clean up scuffs and marks, and polish them so they resist stains and water spots. This preventative care will keep them looking like new.

Spanx Skinny Britches
This is a new product from Spanx that’s been on a lot of morning TV shows. Traditional shapers give you a lot of control. Skinny britches are layerable, so you can customize the level of compression that you want. You can target the areas you want to control by combining styles. Use one for a little smoothing or layer two or three for shaping and control. The hipster targets the lower belly and the shorts target hips and thighs. These jeans were on Good Morning America. The waistband is replaced by a tummy control panel to combat muffin tops. Plant A Tree

Dos & Don'ts of Gladiator Sandals

The shoe is characterized by lots of horizontal straps and laces that can go all the way to the knees. The modern gladiator sandal comes in ankle length and knee high styles, ranging from perfectly flat soles to high-heel platform interpretations.

Video phones (aka video chatting) are finally here! Now you can have face-to-face conversations in real-time from anywhere in the world (with internet access). Video-chatting uses your computer screen and feels like you’re talking to someone across a desk or table. Familiar uses include chats between business associates, grandparents and grandkids, parents and college kids, and family and a parent who’s away on business.

There are even more ways to use video chatting, such as
-Have family dinners together even when the whole family is spread across the country. Just set the computer on one end of the table and everyone can eat together.
-Share romantic dinners when your spouse is out of town. Just set out the candles, wine, and dinner on either side of the computer and stay connected.
-Birthday parties - put the computer in the middle of the action and everyone can enjoy the party together.

The more you do it, the more ideas you’ll come up with for your family and business.
All it takes is a program (free) and some inexpensive equipment - speakers, microphone, webcam and lighting.

The Programs

Many video-chat programs are free. Choose the program you want, download it to your computer, choose your id name, and follow some simple instructions to set it up. Some common programs you might have heard of…Skype (http://www.skype.com/, seen it used on Oprah?), ooVoo (http://www.oovoo.com/, has cool visual effects), and iChat (a fav of MAC users). Some programs even let you conference with up to 6 people at the same time.

The Sound

Most new computers come with built-in speakers and microphone. These don’t work for video-chatting because the conversation from the speakers feeds-back into the microphone so the other caller hears themselves instead of you. You need a microphone that can’t "hear" your speakers.

Basic –A headset is an inexpensive way to solve this problem. The draw backs to a headset - you’re tied to the computer by wires, it can be uncomfortable for long calls, it messes up your hair, and only one person can participate in the call at a time. The headset used in the tv story is an analogue stereo headset from Plantronics ($25).

Better - The better option is a speaker phone. I’ve really liked the IPEVO TR10 Speakerphone ($79) because it has echo cancellation for natural conversation; is hands-free so you have freedom to move around, works as speaker phone or handset so you can also have private conversations, and you don’t have to wear it so your hair stays perfect.

The Camera

Basic - Some computers come with a built-in webcam. They are convenient and provide basic functionality. The problem - you never get real eye contact with these cameras because of the position of the camera. All the camera sees is the tops of your eyelids. And the camera is limited to showing your face, so you can’t really show the other caller anything else in the room.

Better - The better option is a separate web camera mounted to the side of your computer screen. Mount the camera at eye-level, right next to your screen so you can quickly look back and forth between the camera and screen. This simulates natural eye movements that occur in normal natural conversation. My favorite webcam is the IPEVO Pointer Cam (http://www.ipevo.com/, $40). This camera is unique – you can pick it up so you can show the viewer things other than your face - close-ups of objects and text, your entire outfit or hair style, a room you just reorganized etc. This camera allows you to share your life instead of just your face. This might seem insignificant, and after you chat a few times, you’ll really appreciate this feature.

Lighting

Basic – Chat programs are designed to use regular room lighting. The problem with most room lighting is that if comes from the ceiling. Down lighting literally creates a "horror show." When the light comes from above, it creates shadows under our eyes, nose, and chin like a Freddy Kruger movie. Not the best look for date night or business calls.

Better - The best lighting for video calls is soft filtered light coming straight into your face. Position yourself in front of a window with indirect light. Or use two clamp-on work lights from a home improvement store with frosted low wattage day-light bulbs. Aim the light straight into your face (the low wattage/filtered light keeps you from getting blinded).

What's the upside of a down economy? There are LOTS of great deals, even in department stores!

Here are some tips for getting great deals in department stores:

Shop the sale racks: 20 – 75+% off
Know the store's price guarantees (some stores will refund the price difference if an item you purchased goes on sale within a few days)
Look for coupons online, on blogs, and in the newspaper
Use your debt cards with miles/points (the Chase debt card gives you Continental miles for each dollar you charge)
Sign up for weekly store emails for insider coupons and specials
Use store credit cards for extra savings (pay them off immediately to avoid undoing the savings with interest charges)
Don't be afraid to buy something that doesn't fit perfectly, most garments can be altered.

Beware - Any item that you don't wear is a waste of money, no matter how good the deal it is.

A tailor can help make the most of a great deal.

A tailor can make a garment that’s too big fit you perfectly.

Producer Sarah Greir got a free pair of pants for free. They were way too big, so she had them tailored and now they fit her like a glove.

Sarah Shah got her jeans for $17 at Walmart and had them tailored for $30. It’s okay if the tailoring costs more than the garment. Look at the total cost (price you spent on the garment and the cost of tailoring)to see if it's worth the money to get the garment.

Easy fixes by a tailor – size of waistband, length of sleeves/pants/skirts
More expendive alterations – jacket shoulders, bias cut fabrics, intricate beadwork/embroidery/stitching

Dress Yourself Skinny (TM)

No matter how attractive a woman is, more often than not, she doesn’t like what she sees in the mirror. We spend lots of energy trying fad diets, starting exercise programs, or just beating ourselves up about the way our bodies look. There is another way! You can make yourself look thinner just by changing your clothing.

Many women just choose the wrong clothing. Either we wear clothes that are too loose to cover up imperfections. Or we insist on wearing a certain size and look like we’re bursting out of our too tight clothes. We think we’re hiding our flaws but we are really making ourselves look 10 to 30 pounds heavier than we really are.

Today I brought along 3 women who would like to change their bodies. We’re going to make them look thinner just by changing their clothing. We aren’t even going to use Spanks!

Model 1 – Hips & Thighs

Michelle just had a baby. She used to be a size 2 and is now a size 8. She’d like to reduce her hips and thighs. Here’s what we did to create the illusion of smaller hips and thighs:
- Shrank her hips with wider leg pants and by expanding her shoulders (puffy sleeves)
- Showed off her small waist by emphasizing her ribcage (tailored vest)
- Divert attention away from her hips by bringing the focus to her upper body and feet (bright color and detail)
- Made her thinner over all by making her look taller - upper body lengthened with V-neckline and vertical lines, legs lengthened with really long pants and platform heels

Melissa's outfit is from Macy's: INC knit shirt ($24), XOXO Vest ($44), Kenneth Cole Jeans ($99), Rocket Dog Platforms ($59)

Model 2 – Tummy

Beverly is the business manager for sculptor Pablo Solomon. She is a size 8 and would like to minimize her tummy. Here’s what we did to create the illusion of a smaller tummy:
- Camouflaged the tummy (with flat pleats, or rouching)
- Showed off her small waist by emphasizing her ribcage
- Divert attention away from tummy by bringing the focus to her upper body (jewelry) & legs
- Made her thinner over all by making her look taller (Upper body lengthened by V-neckline and pendant necklace. Legs lengthened with high heels)

Beverly's outfit is from Macy's: Adrianna Pappel dress ($160) and Kenneth Cole shoes ($99)

Model 3 – Thick Torso (no waist)
Sarah (me) is a size 12-14 and would like to create a waist to make torso look thinner.
Here’s what we did to create the illusion of a smaller waist
- Broaden shoulders (reveal skin at shoulders)
- Boaden hips (A-line skirt)
- Emphasize ribcage (this is the smallest part of a woman’s body)
- Camouflaged the tummy (with flat gathers)
- Divert attention away from torso by bringing the focus to her upper body (jewelry) and legs
- Made her thinner over all by making her look taller (upper body lengthened by V-neckline and legs lengthened with shoes with heels)

The tricks to Dressing Yourself Skinny (TM):
- Avoid horizontal lines (makes us look wider) & create lots of V’s (makes us look taller)
- Divert attention to your assets so you don’t look at your flaws
- Make yourself taller with long pants and heels (even ½" heel makes a difference)
- Balance your proportions so your hips and shoulders appear to be the same width and waist looks smaller

Spring 2009 looks are classic and wearable. The trends are a continuation of everything we loved from Spring 2008. I brought along some outfits from Dillard's to show you some examples of the hottest trends.

Trend 1 – Luxe Lady – Hollywood inspired glamour from the 1940s features very tailored pieces, dainty gloves, daring shoes, pearls, floppy hats and round sunglasses.

Decoding The First Lady's Inauguration Look

We can tell a lot about a person by the clothes they wear. Image isn’t everything. However, our outfit does generate an instant emotional reaction and sets the tone for our communication and actions.

Michelle Obama was brilliant in her clothing choice for the inauguration. Her outfit was traditional and original, approachable and glamorous. It signaled the distinctly new elements of the Obama Presidency while still representing reverence for the Office of the President.

The underlying message of any outfit can be "translated/decoded" by analyzing the elements - style, color, and fabric.

Style - The style of the First lady's look was modest, classic, and monochromatic. The outfit mirrored the choices of past First Ladies and was traditional in this respect. The style element showed respect for tradition.

Color –The color gold is classic, inviting and regal. It was appropriate for the occasion and at the same time unique and unexpected since past First Ladies have chosen variations of red, white, or blue. Gold is a dominant color in traditional African fabrics, so this color also reflects Mrs. Obama’s personal heritage. The green shoes are a totally unexpected element of surprise. The colors of her outfit are a metaphore for the "Change" this family represents.

Fabric – The Isabel Toledo wool lace suit has a texture that looks like it feels good to the touch. Texture is very effective in making people feel closer to you – it makes the wearer seem warm and open. The crystal details add a little glamour. The fabric element communicates an openness for the American people (texture) and at the same time reinforces the regal quality (sparkle).

The message of The First lady’s outfit is "I respect the traditions of the Presidency, I am a new breed, I am approachable, and I expect your respect."

They are great places for unique and inexpensive holiday gifts (no one needs to know how much you spent or where you got it). Think of the staff as resale stylists - they can help pick the right piece for that special someone and have creative ideas for mixing resale pieces with your existing clothing.

Look for designer handbags, shoes, party dresses, tops, etc. Clothing sizes from 0 to 16 and shoe sizes from 6 to 11. And swing by the last chance sale rack....saw a pair of size 6-1/2 red satin Gucci shoes for $105!! I almost cut my toes off to fit into these shoes. On second thought, they'd be beautiful displayed on a bookshelf in my office!

Shopping Tips (thanks Dardan, resale shopper extraordinaire)

Bring cash or credit cards (many stores don't take checks). Check the pricing schedule (it's usually posted), the item you want might be ready for another mark down. Check the return policy so you know whether items can be returned for the same value. Bring along any items you want to match so you can tell right away if they work together. Size labels may not be accurate - items may have shrunk, stretched, been mislabeled, or the brand can run small/large. Hold it up to you, try it on, use a tape measure or ask the staff for assistance. Buy the item because you love it rather than because it’s a great deal. Then you'll enjoy it and actually wear it.

Stay Connected At For The Holidays Using Video Chatting

Lots of us aren't traveling for the holidays to see the people we love...but still want a way to stay connected. Video chatting Skype, Oovoo, and iChat video conferencing make that possible. Families can sit around their computers and have face to face conversations and open gifts together. You could even set the equipment up at the end of each of your dinner tables and actually have a family dinner together even though you're miles apart.

Video Chat programs are free, easy to use and just need a couple of accessories to really make your "calls" go smoothly.

The Programs

Most programs are free. Just go to the website and follow instructions to download to your computers. Some of the many - Skype (http://www.skype.com/ maybe you have seen it used on Oprah), ooVoo (http://www.oovoo.com/ has really cool visual effects), iChat (http://www.ichat.com/ a fav of MAC users), etc. Some even allow you to include people from up to 6 locations for free.

Sounding Good

Most computers are equiped with a microphone and speakers, but these don't work so well with video chatting programs because the person you're talking to will here your voice and their voice at the same time. So, you need is a microphone that can’t “hear” your speakers.
A headset is a great inexpensive option and good for privae conversations (start at $10). The only draw backs: 1) you’re tied to your computer by the wires so you can't step away for a minute, 2) only one person at each computer can be involved in the conversation, 3) it messes up your hair.

Another option is a non-interfearance speakerphone. My fav is the IPEVO version (TR-10i Speakerphone for iChat for MAC users http://us.ipevo.com/products/pro_detail.php?id=50, TR-10 Portable Conference Phone for PC users http://us.ipevo.com/products/pro_detail.php?id=14 $79). I like it because it has echo cancellation (so you can have a natural conversation), you can move around freely (because you’re not attached to your computer), you can switch to handset mode for private conversations, you don’t have to wear it (so your hair stays perfect). This is especially great at the holidays when you're including a whole group in the conversation, opening presents together, eating dinner together, etc.

Looking Good

Some computers come with built-in webcams. These can be weird to use because you never have an eye-to-eye conversation because it’s difficult to look into the camera and watch the other caller on your computer screen at the same time. It’s better to have a stand-alone camera that you can mount at eye-level next to your screen. With this configuration, you can naturally look back and forth between the camera and screen the way you would in natural conversation.

My fav is the IPEVO Pointer Cam because it's independent, so you can mount it where you want. You can also pick it up to show the caller something in another direction, give a close up of details, or even play with unusual camera angles. http://us.ipevo.com/products/pro_detail.php?id=12

Looking for special gifts without a big price-tag? Here are three of my favorite secret sources for unique gifts on a budget.

Spec's is known for specialty liquors, wines and foods, but they also have unique gifts starting at $3. Glassware, bar baubles, cookies, cheeses, caviar, cigars...the list goes on and on. You can even select a bunch of goodies and they'll put them all in a gift basket.

If you're shopping for liquor, look for gift sets. Gift sets sell for the same price as the liquor in the set, plus you get some cool accessories like glassware, flasks, and shakers. Spec's has a huge selection of gift sets for almost every liquor. In the segment, we showed Mount Gay Rum paired with a mojito muddler & muddling glass ($15) and Jack Daniels with a logo flask ($32).

Great wrapping is the secret to making an inexpensive item look special. Go for luxiourous ribbons and wrapping that adds volume to the item.

Turn a tin of tea into a beautiful hostess gift with some printed cellophane and pretty ribbon. A $6 decorative wine stopper looks like a $20 gift when presented in a gift box overflowing in crinkled shred and a big organza bow. Peach jam for $3 looks like a European treasure nestled in shred inside a big pretty box.

In the segment, we spent $2-$3 in packaging for each gift. In some cases, we even we spent more in packaging than we did on the actual present. This might seem silly, but when we added the cost of gift and packaging, the end result looked like much more.

High-End Looks On Any Budget

The easiest way to creat a new look for the holidays is to combine classic clothing from your closet with on-trend accessories. The trick to making this work is to choose simple clothing, hair, and makeup and let you and the accessories take center stage.

We picked five high-end looks from the Neimann Marcus Holiday Book for inspiration. We recreated them with accessories from Creme de la Gem Jewelry (Owner/Designer Gretchen Rapp (281) 728-6998, http://www.creme-dela-gem.com/) and SW Tading (8000 Harwin St. in Houston). Creme de la Gem Jewelry specializes in custom real stone and costume jewelry at affordalble prices. SW Trading has a huge selection of costume jewelry and accessories. You can also create similar looks with accessories from your local department or discount store.

Statement Pearls

Create this look by layering at least six strands of pearls of different sizes and lengths. You can use all white pearls or combine different colors to create your own look. These faux pearls from Niemann Marcus are over $2000 for the collection ...that's right, it's $2000 worth of fake!

We created the look with REAl freshwater pearls for less than $100. Below, these multi-strand necklaces from Creme de la Gem Jewelry are all REAL freshwater pearls. The triple strand necklaces of white or gold freshwater pearls are $34, the larger round freshwater pearl necklace with crystals is $39, and the triple-strand citrine necklace with white freshwater pearls is $109.

Black Pearls with Crystal Pendant

Create this look with black beads and pearls mixed with a crystal pendant. To keep the look current, coordinate rings and bracelets with the pendant. The look from Neimann Marcus has a retail price of over $7800. We recreated the look for $82 with a black and white glass pearl necklace from Creme de la Gem Jewelry ($49) combined with a crystal serpent pin from SW Trading ($18). The stretch bracelet ($10) and ring ($5) from SW Trading coordinate with both pieces without being too matchy-matchy. You could also choose a pendant, ring, and bracelets with colored stones like the second option in the TV segment.

A Touch Of Sparkle

A sparkly pendant on a thin chain is the perfect thing to dress up any casual outfit without taking in over the top. These gold and diamond pendants (below) from Neimann Marcus range from $2200 to $2400 each. We recreated the look with rhinestone pendants on metal chains from SW Trading for $4 to $12.

Elegant Bling

An armful of gold bangles with diamonds and semi-prescious stones with matching rings (above) are the perfect thing to turn casual clothing into a party outfit. These examples from Neimann Marcus range from $750 to $5000 EACH. Our silver and gold colored metal bangles with crystals from SW Trading are $5 each. The rings from Creme de la Gem Jewelry are real sterling silver with semi-prescious stones for $19.

Delicate Diamonds

The key to creating this look is choosing very delicate pieces with pave settings. The accessories in the set should be similar in color, setting, and thickness. The pave diamond heart pendant, bangles, and hoop earrings from Neimann Marcus total over $10,000. We found a beautiful sterling silver heart pendant with pave crystals at Creme de la Gem jewelry for $29. We found a similar pendant of silver-colored metal and rhinestones from SW Trading for $6. The bangles ($7 each) and hoop earrings ($8) also came from SW Trading.

Easy Last Minute Halloween Costumes

It's Halloween and you need a last minute costume? Here are some quick and easy ideas made from things we found around the house.

Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin is the most popular costume this year. All you need is a suit (preferable red) or blouse and pencil skirt, boots, pearls, and "Sarah Palin" look-alike glasses. Beauty Queen or Award-Winning Actress

Dress Up Your Dog

Can't leave out the dogs! The GreyHounds were were the hit of the greenroom! They were both adopted from Greyhound Pets of America (http://www.gpahouston.org/). To make shoes for a dog, cut the soles out of a pair of kids shoes and slip them around the dog's ankles. Add a vest, star, and bandana for the Sherrif costume (Bull takes his job so seriously!). Or come up with something of your own with clothes from around the house.

The Hottest Thing In Workout Wear - The Athletic Skirt!

For average women, the worst thing about working out is the way we feel and look in most athletic wear. It just isn’t flattering.

This is the typical outfit we wear to work out – see how it makes the tummy, hips, and thighs look like the biggest part of us? Feeling self-conscious about our bodies can even stop us from working out.

There is hope! Over the past couple of years, athletic skirts have become the hottest thing in workout wear because they make us look good! Since I got my walking skirt last spring, I’ve started walking more just because I feel cute in it.

Skirts are so popular, there’s even a 5K race called “Skirt Chasers” to celebrate the skirt. The next Shirt Chaser race is in Austin on Saturday, Oct 11. (www.skirtsports.com)

Hot Shoes For Fall!

Men always want to know why women love shoes. Here’s the secret – shoes are a mood enhancer. Shoes make women feel sexy, powerful, and feminine – and NEVER make us feel fat. It’s the perfect addiction!

This season, women's shoes are a mix of retro styles updated with modern materials and masculine styles softened with feminine details. The hottest colors are metallics, reds, purples, black & gold combinationss, and bold colors. The dominant materials are patent leather, metallic finishes, crackled leather, satin, animal skins and suede.

The shoe styles shown on San Antonio Living are fall styles that work in our hot climate. They work with bare legs while it’s hot and with tights when the weather cools down.

Oxfords

Sun Protection With Style

Protecting our skin is widely recognized as one of the most important and least expensive measures that we can take to preserve our youth, beauty, and the health of our skin. Here are some strategies to protect your skin so you’re cute today and still beautiful tomorrow!

Sunless Tanner

We know we should stay out of the sun (and the tanning bed), but we still love that golden glow of a tan. So what do we do? Sunless tanner is a great answer. There are lots to choose from lotions that darken the skin over night, subtle tanning lotions that darken the skin slowly over the course of a week, and lotions that dye the skin. For best results with sunless tanners, exfoliate first and apply to completely dry skin.

The Solerra Sunless Tanning Mitt is the best sunless tanner I’ve ever used. The single-use plastic lined mitt makes application so easy, without the mess. Just slide your hand into the mitt and smooth the sunless tanner on your skin. The sunless tanner is on both sides of the mitt, so you can switch hands to get your whole body. Protective Clothing

Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is the term used to define the level of UV protection in clothing. The white t-shirt we usually wear as a cover up has a UPF of 7 and drops to 3 when it’s wet. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends a UPF of at least 30.

All clothing is not created equal. The tightness of the weave, the weight, type of fiber, color and amount of skin covered all affect the amount of protection they provide. Look for:

Synthetic materials with a tight weave. If you can see through the fabric, then UV radiation can penetrate it – and get to your skin.
Clothing with a UPF rating of at least 30. A UPF of 50 is excellent and blocks 99% of the sun’s UV rays.
Dark or bright color fabrics because the dyes absorb some of the UV radiation.
UPF clothing is available in most sporting goods stores and online. Here are some cute examples with a UPF of 50.

Hats

Hats can protect our face and shoulders from the sun. The typical straw hat has a loose weave and lets a lot of sun through the little holes between the strands of straw. Look for hats with a tight weave, wide brim of atleast 3-inches, and UPF of at least 30. The bigger the brim, the more protection.

Sunglasses

When we’re in the sun, the pupils in our eyes contract to reduce the light that enters our eye. Sunglasses shade our eyes, so the pupil opens wide and over-rides our body’s natural defenses against the damage of UV rays. If the sunglasses don’t have 100% UV-protection we actually allow more damage to our eyes by wearing sunglasses.

Choose sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Look for a label on the lenses of the glasses. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to get the protection. Examples of 4 pairs of sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection(Target, between $13 and $17).
